Initiatives

Habitat for Humanity of Miami and Shelby Counties is committed to providing opportunities for families to live in homes that are safe, decent and affordable. Through our Neighborhood Revitalization efforts and partnership with donors, volunteers, and the community we offer two main programs to accomplish this goal: or homeownership program for first-time homeowners and our home repair program for current homeowners.

Neighborhood Revitalization

Neighborhood Revitalization is a holistic approach that expands Habitat's traditional partnership with new homeowners and volunteers to include neighbors and local organizations for greater impact in the communities served.

While home construction continues to play a vital role, a bigger toolbox includes repairs, building a sense of community, partnering in advocacy and taking a larger perspective allows Habitat to serve more families.

Habitat's Home Repair Program helps homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes, reclaiming their homes with pride and dignity. Habitat helps revitalize the appearance of our neighborhoods and strengthen connections within the community.

CostofHome

Cost of Home

At Habitat for Humanity, we know that a family should never have to spend more than 30 percent of their income on a home. But consider that today nearly 19 million U.S. households pay half or more of their income on a place to live. That is unacceptable. Over the next five years, we commit to mobilizing our local Habitat organizations, our partners, our volunteers and community members across the country to find the solutions and help create the policies that will allow 10 million individuals to afford the #CostOfHome. Join us by supporting policy solutions focused on:

  • Increasing supply and preservation of affordable homes
  • Equitably increasing access to credit
  • Optimizing land use for affordable homes
  • Ensuring access to communities of opportunity

Recent Developments: On May 16, 2022, the government unveiled an action plan to address the affordable housing supply shortage. The plan calls for legislation such as the Neighborhood Homes Investment Act and the Unlocking Possibilities Program. Both are programs that Habitat has advocated for through Cost of Home.
